VIU Student Code of Conduct (policy 32.04)

Student Academic Code of Conduct (policy 96.01): outlines the standards of academic integrity, the responsibility of the students and violation of academic integrity.

Academic Misconduct: If an academic misconduct occurrs in the form of cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, facilitation of academic misconduct and non-attendance, the instructor is responsible for taking the appropriate action. Please refer to procedure 96.01.001 (Student Academic Code of Conduct Procedure) for more details.

Graduate Business Students Code of Conduct

Attendance

  • It is mandatory for students to attend the first day of semester class. Attendance is required in all classes in your program unless your absence is unavoidable due to a medical emergency or extenuating circumstances
  • If classes are missed due to medical emergency or extenuating circumstances, students are required to notify instructors and the Graduate Business Studies Office with a proof to justify reason
  • For extended absences (more than one class), you need to notify the Director and instructors.
  • If you are going to be absent for reasons other than medical emergencies or death in your immediate family, you need to seek permission from the Director
  • Absences from class without valid reasons or consistently arriving late are considered as unprofessional behaviour and could result in being withdrawn from a class or the program
  • Workshops and events organized by the Graduate Business Studies Office and by the Internship team for MBA students are mandatory for students to attend in the program

Missing an exam

  • If a student is seriously ill and cannot take an exam at the scheduled time, he/she must inform the instructor prior to the exam
  • You must also bring medical documentation to the Graduate Business Studies Office within 5 working days of the missed exam
  • Students will have to contact the instructor to determine if and when the examination may be rescheduled

Professionalism

Graduate Business Studies students are expected to demonstrate a high level of professional behaviour. Professionalism is determined by behaviours- this includes how you dress, how you talk and act. Your attitude toward the task, how you interact with other people and your written and digital communication with faculty and staff. You are expected to be in class on time, with current assignments completed so that you are prepared to discuss the course material and are able to positively and constructively contribute. You need to pay attention and listen when other people are talking.

Phone

You are expected to turn off and put away your phone and other devices not necessary for class. Use of your phone in class is disrespectful to the instructor and other students. You are also expected to respect personal boundaries and not take photos and videos without prior explicit permission of the instructor and others in the classroom.

Copyright policy

Textbooks are an integral part of the resources that you need to successfully complete your graduate program. It is illegal and unethical to make photocopies of the textbook in Canada. For further information, please review the Copyright Act of Canada.

You are required to purchase legal copies of the textbook. You could potentially reduce your cost by purchasing used copies of textbooks that may be available in the book store and the student union.

Probation and Suspension From the Program 

  • A student is placed on probation when they have a GPA below 2.0 (a ‘C’ average) at the end of the Foundation Program, Semester A, Semester B and/or Semesters C1 and C2. 
  • A student will be removed from probation status when they achieve a GPA of 2.0 or higher in the subsequent term and placed back on regular status
  • If the student fails to attain a GPA of 2.0 or higher in the subsequent term, that student will be suspended
  • If a student fails three courses in the foundation program, then that student will be suspended
    • Once suspended, the student can apply for readmission after one term and successful completion of all outstanding referrals
  • Re-admission is not automatic as it will depend on availability of space. This decision is made by the Director, Graduate Business Studies.
