Thesis title: Leisure in a Cultural Context: Exploring Kwakwaka’wakw Perspectives on Leisure | October 7th, 1:00- 3:00 pm (PST)
The Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management, in conjunction with our World Leisure Centre of Excellence, is pleased to introduce ‘Maxw’mawidzamga Sara A. Fulla, Graduate Student in progress, who will be presenting her thesis research.
Thesis title: Leisure in a Cultural Context: Exploring Kwakwaka’wakw Perspectives on Leisure
This thesis is an autoethnography and qualitative research that explores leisure in a Kwakwaka’wakw cultural context. To accomplish this, the research objectives were to: 1) explore the thoughts, experiences, stories, and teachings around leisure in a cultural context, specifically to the Kwakwaka’wakw people; 2) identify if there is a relationship between leisure and cultural Kwakwaka’wakw ways of life; and, 3) identify words and concepts in the Kwak'wala language that can describe leisure. To achieve these objectives, two research methods were used to gather data: 1) autoethnography, and 2) conversational interviews. The research question for this research is: what is leisure within a Kwakwaka’wakw context?
The significance of this research is to add Indigenous voices to leisure literature, to allow scholars to rethink leisure scholarship in a way that allows for Indigenous worldviews to be acknowledged by engaging with Indigenous ontologies, epistemologies, and frameworks. Ultimately this research acts as a form of decolonizing literature, examining leisure from an Indigenous worldview.
