2016 Special Focus: The Sustainability of Tourism and Leisure
The Inaugural International Conference on Tourism and Leisure Studies will aim to define some of the key questions for the Tourism and Leisure knowledge community. On one hand: are ‘sustainability’ and ‘tourism’ mutually exclusive concepts and practices? How do we balance the economic sustainability of local or national tourism industries with principles of ecological and cultural sustainability? On the other: leisure time is being squeezed by the demands of work life, and digital media is destabilizing the once clear division of work from play. How do these forces demand a shift in how we understand the concept and practice of leisure? In these times of unprecedented social, economic and environmental change, the conference will attempt to map an agenda that addresses fundamental questions about the spaces and practices of leisure and tourism and explore sustainable courses of action for the leisure and tourism industries.
