The Learning Community Courses
Semester 1
An introduction, from a user perspective to the principles and procedures of financial accounting. Topics include the conceptual framework, the accounting equation, double-entry bookkeeping, the accounting cycle, an introduction to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and financial statement preparation and interpretation. CPA transfer available. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: Min. "C" in English 12 and min. "C" in one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Computer Science 11, or Computer Science 12.
An introduction to critical thinking and reading, academic writing, and research skills, consistent with the conditions and expectations students encounter as readers and writers at university. Note: Students are not permitted to register in more than one first-year English course concurrently. Credit will only be granted for one of ENGL 117 or ENGL 115. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: Min. "C" in English 12 or equivalent.
An examination of the process of achieving organizational goals through the use of strategic and operational strategies involving the four major management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Credit will only be granted for one of MGMT 371 or MGMT 192. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: Min. "C" in English 12 and min. "C" in one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Computer Science 11, or Computer Science 12.
A review of mathematical tools necessary to attain the quantitative competency to undertake coursework in several areas of business. Emphasis will be placed on relevant concepts such as rates of change, marginal changes, inflection and extremum points, sensitivity analysis and their applications in economics, finance and business. Prerequisite: Min. "C" in one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Computer Science 11, or Computer Science 12.
A survey of the marketing function and process at the firm level. Topics include examination of the marketing environment; the critical elements of the firm's marketing mix; product, pricing, distribution, and promotion variables; contemporary trends in marketing; buyer behaviour and marketing research. MARK 160 was formerly called MARK 290; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: Min. "C" in English 12 or enrollment in the CBM program.
Semester 2
An introduction to business and technical communication skills with a focus on documents (such as letters and reports) and presentations. Topics may include planning, outlining, summarizing, presenting data, handling references, and editing. The course comprises several practical assignments, including a formal report and an oral presentation. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: A first-year English course with a min. "C" or one of LBST 111 or LBST 112 with a min. "C".
An introduction to mathematical techniques used to determine the present and future value of cash flows. Topics include the financial management function, operating and financial leverage, working capital, current asset management, and sources of short-term financing. CPA transfer available. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: ACCT 100 and min. "C" in one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Computer Science 11, or Computer Science 12.
A study of how behaviour generated by people in organizations affects the individual, relationships with others, and performance in groups with focus on the way organizations function as a whole and the factors which relate to effectively managing organizations. Credit will only be granted for one of HRMN 292 or MGMT 292. (2:1:0)
Prerequisite: MGMT 192.
