Putting Leisure on the Map
The 10th anniversary of VIU's World Center for Leisure Excellence was celebrated on November 29, with a special edition of PechaKucha Nanaimo with the theme "Putting Leisure on the Map". The event was held at Vancouver Island University and brought together VIU representatives, faculty members, visiting scholars, students, alumni, and community members on an evening filled with fun and inspiring stories related to leisure research and practice.

Nordic Master in Outdoor Studies (Friluftsliv Studier) is now open for applications
New master’s programme, a joint Nordic Master in Outdoor Studies (Friluftsliv Studies), supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers (www.nordicmaster.com), with four collaborating universities – University of Southeast Norway (Bø) (coordinator), Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, Stockholm and Holar University College, Iceland. The program is now open for applicants. The study start will be in late August/early September 2020.
Thesis Presentation: Claire Qianying Lei
The Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management, in conjunction with our World Leisure Centre of Excellence is pleased to introduce Claire Qianying Lei, Graduate Student in progress, who will be presenting her research and thesis.
The purpose of this research is to understand the effect of smart tourism on art centres increasing visitations. To understand this, 300 surveys were developed and distributed to the Lipont Art Centre in order to collect the data.

WLCE Visiting Scholar Program - Dr. Bricker's Experience at VIU and Call for Applications
On November 8, the MA SLM cohort said goodbye to the first visiting scholar of the semester, Dr. Kelly Bricker, Professor and Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at the University of Utah. Dr. Bricker is specialized in sustainable tourism and protected areas management and has research and teaching interests in ecotourism, sense of place, community development, natural resources management, value of nature-based experiences, and the impacts of tourism.
